Alumni Spotlight: Kimberly Handberry Parker

Leading Now,

What was your favorite class day?

Education Day stood out as my favorite because of my lifelong love for education and passion for our youth — values instilled in me by my mother, an educator. I was especially inspired to learn about programs in Richmond County that I wasn’t previously aware of and to see the meaningful impact they are having on students and families.

How did LA impact your professional life, career trajectory, and community involvement?

Leadership Augusta gave me a deeper understanding of our community and how leadership truly shows up across sectors. It expanded my professional network, strengthened my confidence as a leader, and encouraged me to be more intentional about where and how I serve. Most importantly, it reinforced my commitment to staying engaged and using my skills to support initiatives that positively impact Augusta.

Are you more involved in the community since graduation? How? Where?

Since graduating from Leadership Augusta, I’ve been more intentional about my community involvement. I served as the Women in Business Chair for two years with the Augusta Metro Chamber of Commerce, where I focused on leadership development, community engagement, and creating opportunities that support and elevate women professionals. This role allowed me to stay actively involved while contributing in a meaningful way to the Augusta community.

Favorite memory from your class year?

My favorite memory from my class was attending our leadership retreat. It was during that time I truly discovered new friendships, deepened existing connections, and experienced the joy of simply being ourselves together. The laughter, bonding, and receiving our class nicknames made it even more special. I will forever be Kool and the Gang Kimberly.

What advice do you have for people interested in participating in LA?

My advice for anyone interested in joining Leadership Augusta is to come in with an open mind and open heart. Be willing to learn, ask questions, and step outside of your comfort zone. Embrace every class day, engage with your classmates, and take advantage of the relationships you’ll build — they are just as valuable as the knowledge you gain. The experience will challenge you, inspire you, and connect you more deeply to our community in ways you don’t expect.

Why should others apply to be a part of LA?

Others should apply to be part of Leadership Augusta because it offers a unique opportunity to grow both personally and professionally while gaining a deeper understanding of our community. The program exposes participants to leaders, organizations, and initiatives that shape Augusta, while fostering meaningful relationships with a diverse group of peers. Leadership Augusta challenges you to think differently, broadens your perspective, and equips you with the knowledge and connections to make a lasting impact in the community.
