Alumni Spotlight: Briana Williams

Leading Now,

What was your favorite class day?

Criminal Justice Day was my favorite class day. I enjoyed hearing from local leaders at the courthouse, learning about the community’s needs, and seeing how different sectors work together to make an impact. It was also where I first met my now husband. 😊

How did LA impact your professional life, career trajectory, and community involvement?

LA strengthened my leadership, collaboration, and community engagement skills. I became Queensborough’s Community Relations Officer in February 2020, just before COVID-19 limited both my ability to fully step into the role and our class’s opportunity to experience the complete program. Despite those challenges, LA broadened my perspective, helped me build valuable connections, and taught me to be adaptable and intentional in serving my community, lessons I continue to apply in my work.

Favorite memory from your class year?

My favorite memory was the sense of connection our class maintained during such an unusual year. Even with the limitations created by COVID-19, we found ways to learn from one another, support each other, and make the most of the opportunities available to us. That shared resilience and commitment made the experience memorable and demonstrated the kind of leadership the program encourages.

What advice do you have for people interested in participating in LA?

I would encourage anyone who is interested in LA to apply and approach the experience with an open mind and a willingness to participate fully. Take time to build relationships with your classmates, ask thoughtful questions, and look for ways to apply what you learn in both your professional role and your community involvement. Engage with someone new each class day to make sure you don’t miss out on a meaningful connection. The value of the program extends beyond the class sessions, it comes from the connections, perspectives, and opportunities to grow.
